Membership
Membership in NHS is an honor bestowed upon students at FSWC by the Faculty Council. To qualify for NHS, you must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a weighted GPA of 3.6 or higher. If your GPA meets this requirement, you will receive a letter in the early weeks of the spring semester asking you to submit an information packet to the club advisor. Your information packet will let the Faculty Council examine closely your character, service, and leadership. With the information given to them, the Faculty Council will ultimately make an informed decision about inviting you to join NHS.

Follow these guidelines when writing your information packet:
1. Title Page
The most important thing a title page needs is a title! For your title use, "FSWCHS NHS Information Packet." Your cover page should be formatted as if it were the cover page of an essay in MLA format. You will need to include your name, grade, address, phone number and your parent or guardian's first and last name. You also will need to include your last name and grade level as the header in the top right corner of each page. The pages need to be in the order of Character, Service, and then Leadership.
3. Service
NHS members serve their school and their community. As you write your information packet's service statement, be sure to describe why service is important to you. Include the hours you have spent serving your school and community since you graduated from eighth grade. Because all service hours are not necessarily equal, the Faculty Council is reluctant to place a minimum requirement on service hours; however, they recommend that you have served at least 50 hours. It is fine if you are not able to give an exact number of service hours, but it would be best to provide an estimate of how many hours you have served and when you served them (e.g. two hours each Saturday since September 2014). You need to describe your service, whether to the school, a church, a library, or the community, in detail. Be sure to include the name, contact information, and signature of the supervisor for each activity in your "Signatures of Understanding" page, which you can access below. It is acceptable to sign for someone with his/her permission if you cannot secure their physical signature (*signed with permission).
2. Character
Good character is typically demonstrated when a student upholds ethical principles, can cooperate with others, is very honest and reliable, shows respect for others and their feelings, and maintains a good lifestyle. When the Faculty Council is discussing a student's character, they will take into account the student's behavior, as well as any discipline and referral records. Students will be refused entrance into NHS if any of their referrals are due to a violation of academic honesty. Include the following in your information packet's character statement: describe the importance of character in general; describe your character specifically and how you embody it; explain why you want to be a part of NHS, what this honor will mean to you, and how you will commit to the club.
4. Leadership
NHS members are leaders, and being a leader means much more than simply holding a title. Leaders contribute ideas, they are resourceful, they think logically before acting, are good problem solvers, promote school activities, and often have a positive outlook on life and their situation. Leadership building experiences often come from collaborating with others and can occur in school, a church, or in community activities. In your information packet's leadership statement, describe your leadership experiences and why those experiences make you a leader in your community. Be sure to explain what specifically makes you a leader and distinguishes you from being a figurehead or great volunteer. Include the name, contact information, and signature of a supervisor that can verify your role as a leader for each position on your "Signatures of Understanding" page. Again, it is acceptable to sign for someone with his/her permission if you cannot secure their physical signature (*signed with permission*).
